An unidentified, allegedly intoxicated motorist initiated a police chase after his Mercedes struck a squad car on the West Side, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The chase ended in the Ukranian Village neighborhood after police had to use a Taser to subdue the man.
He is now facing charges of resisting arrest and driving under the influence, but the article made no mention of the exact charges or how his Chicago DUI attorney might stage a defense.
It all started with an Illinois State Police trooper saw the vehicle being driven erratically at 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday. He stopped the car and ran the plates, which indicated the car had been stolen, but the driver took off while he was in his squad car.
The state trooper notified other police agencies and a chase by Chicago police officers ensued.
City cops picked up his trail on Roosevelt and the Mercedes, which had no passengers, eventually crashed into a police car at West Leavitt and North Iowa streets. Officers from a special unit said they had to tase the driver because he was resisting arrest.
He finally was subdued at about 3:30 a.m. and taken to an unidentified hospital to have the Taser prongs removed from his body. Police say the Mercedes, which was towed, actually was not stolen earlier that day but that police were still trying to contact the owner.
Chicago police are still investigating.
This wouldn't be the first time police have used Tasers to get a DUI suspect under control, including a June 3 arrest in Palo Alto, Ca. In that case, similar to the one in Chicago, a car burglary suspect was chased by police and eventually bitten by a K-9 dog and then tased by officers.
In other words, fleeing police usually doesn't end too well.
