A man was arrested over the weekend for a DUI after Illinois State Police responded to reports of a highway shooter, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. His name was not released by police at the time and it's not yet known whether or not he was the shooter in question.
WBBM Chicago reported the following day that the man's name is John Mauro. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, he may need an Illinois criminal defense attorney in addition to a Chicago DUI lawyer.
At about 1:45 a.m. last Saturday, State Police say they received several calls from motorists regarding a man driving on the eastbound land of Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) and shooting a gun at cars near Cicero Ave.
A man in a gray Toyota was "taking random shots at people," the responding trooper said. Police located a man in the reported area driving a car that matched the description and charged him with a DUI and reckless conduct, according to State Police District Chicago Sgt. Jason Lococo.
Police are still investigating the alleged shooting, though, even though John Mauro's license plate number matched the numbers provided by callers.
An article in the Chicago Tribune identifying the defendant only as a 39-year-old Calumet City man said state police did not find a weapon in his vehicle. No charges have been filed for the alleged shooting, but the details of the reckless conduct charge were not explained by either news outlet.
John Mauro's blood-alcohol level was not disclosed by police, according to WBBM. No injuries were reported, so it appears that the shooter thankfully had bad aim.
If you are arrested and charged with driving under the influence, remember that you're innocent until proven guilty and have the option of retaining an Illinois DUI attorney.
