A 20-year-old man was charged with a DUI after he drove his car through the garage of a random Wheeling house on Sunday morning (Tribune).
The suspect, Wheeling resident Craig Brooks Jr., allegedly was drunk at 8:30 in the morning when he lost control of his Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV and drove right into the side of the garage. No one was in the house at the time and there were no cars inside the garage.
After the crash, police say, Brooks got out and fled the scene on foot, reportedly to a nearby apartment complex. Witnesses reported the incident and it took all of five minutes for police to pick him up.
No alcohol was found in the car, but Brooks left his wallet. So he probably would not have gotten too far before police had a positive I.D.
He was released after posting bail of $100 and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 16 to face charges of DUI, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and driving too fast for conditions.
You can see the damage yourself in the following video posted at YouTube. Something tells me live footage of the crash would be more entertaining, but you can use your imagination:
And since Brooks is underage, a DUI conviction would carry even tougher penalties (Illinois State Police). First offenders, if underage, lose full driving privileges for at least two years, may even be imprisoned for up to one year (depending on the severity of the case) and can be fined up to $2,500.
